About the Arboretum
Girl Scout Troop visits the Arboretum.Hayes Arboretum is the educational project of S.W. Hayes Research Foundation, Inc. Our educational activities and the experiences we offer focus on both nature and recreational programs.

There are 466 acres located in Richmond, Indiana that Hayes Arboretum makes available to our members and visitors. There are unique plant collections, rock and fossil collections and miles of hiking and running paths.

Other features found on his property include 3% of Indiana’s old growth forest, many acres of reforested woods, an 1833 dairy barn that acts as our Nature Center, the Hayes Museum, Adena and Hopewell Indian mounds, ponds, fields, and wetlands. Hayes Arboretum is open free of charge to the public.

There are many reasons to come and visit, bring your friends and family and enjoy the day with us.

Our Mission

Our Hours
March through October:
     9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday

November through February
     Open only for special events and scheduled programs.

The entrance to Hayes Arboretum is located at 801 Elks Road, Richmond, Indiana. [Google Map]

Hayes Arboretum is easily reached via I-70. Take Exit 156A west on U.S. 40 approximately 2 miles. Turn north on Elks Road. Go 1/2 mile to main entrance.

Hayes Arboretum is only 45 minutes from Dayton, Ohio, one hour from Indianapolis, Indiana, and approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Group Tours
Hay Ride during Fall Foliage DayTo provide your group with the best possible experience, we request that all groups call ahead so that we may schedule your visit. Group tours may be scheduled from March through October.

Group visits are free of charge to hike or visit our facilities. If you wish to drive through the Arboretum on our Auto Tour, the fee is $5.00 per vehicle, no reservation required.
